After the last clutch bearing replacement starting the engine was more difficult. In my normal means of picking the wrong problem I thought the battery had died, but with a new 6 volt battery the issue remained.
Out came the started motor. With the cover off the brushes it was obvious there was an issue. The commutator was very black and dirty, an obvious sign of arching. Pulling the brushes out revealed they were badly worn. Another set from a spare starter motor were fitted but some new ones were located on the net from East Sussex Auto – Electrical Spares. My local auto elec said they were unusually long at 22mm.
Further inspection revealed the actuating fork spot weld had broken, see the pics for the fix!!
